The Digital Entrepreneur

In 2007 when I initially joined Facebook, I didn’t think social media and the internet would be what it is today. At that time, you could only join Facebook through invitation and they didn't have the same open sign up options they do now. Years prior to the like button being a real thing, we were using dial-up to access the internet, having to bear the weird screeching noise as our landline communicated with the Decepticons. Oh, and not to mention if someone called our house phone while we were online, it would knock us right off the internet. My how times have changed!

Fast-forward a decade and some change, and we see that we’re in a very digital world. We spend a great deal of our time online which is very different from how our parents and grandparents lived.

In terms of work and making a living for one’s self, entrepreneurship has also evolved over time. On a deeper level, we see many young people rejecting the mindset of working for companies the way in which their families have in the past - committing years/decades to a company, oftentimes at the expense of living their lives. With the emergence of the internet, the opportunity to use a developing resource as a means to solve the generational conflict in how we take to making a living was created.

Today, the internet has allowed many people to carve their path to financial freedom and wealth. Take the young boy who makes $22 million a year reviewing toys on YouTube or digital entrepreneurs like Cici (_thesixfigurechick_ on Instagram) who went from battling cancer, to selling 10,622 eBooks in 3 months, earning $72,962.68.

Many entrepreneurs are now incorporating digital products into their business model or using advertising services via social media as it has been proven to open more channels to reach hundreds upon thousands of consumers directly. Even brick and mortar restaurants that advertise their stores online have found success in getting customers inside their stores.

The internet has become so pervasive that digital advertising in the US is finally bigger than print and television. Companies spent $129 billion on digital advertising in 2019. Much of that being spent advertising on platforms like Google and Facebook (including Instagram as a subsidiary of Facebook).

I often think about the value of having your own business. Even if one is in the business of reviewing toys for a living. As we evolve collectively, detaching from our dependence on employment is pertinent. It’s not that we should not seek and maintain employment, we should always do what needs to be done for our livelihood, it is when this is the only way we are able to sustain ourselves where this becomes challenging.

The effects of the current global pandemic have shown us all how our positions with employers can be effected in the blink of an eye. Many have lost their jobs as a result of companies being unable to pay wages.

Looking forward, I speculate that we will see more individuals taking control of their lives financially - seeing entrepreneurship as a necessary thing. Relying solely on our employer leaves us in a vulnerable position. I also see the internet continuing to evolve in utility. Watching it play a major role in the redistribution of wealth as time goes on will be an interesting phenomenon to observe, specifically as digital currency evolves.

Astrologically, this dynamic is the epitome of the Saturn in Aquarius transit we are currently experiencing. Business and entrepreneurship (Saturn) meets mass communication, networking, and the internet (Aquarius). Another aspect of this transit is using our vision of the future (Aquarius) and where things are heading to strategize (Saturn) and place ourselves in position to win by utilizing our available resources effectively.

The internet is a huge resource! How we use it is up to us.
