Self-Talk: Is It Empowering or Disabling You?

How we speak to ourselves internally is integral to a healthy mind and spirit. The things we say have a direct influence over what we believe about ourselves and the reality of our lives. Negative self-talk kills so many visions and dreams before they even have the chance to come into fruition.

If we use Astrology to counsel ourselves and identify how we go about speaking to ourselves internally, we can observe the sign Mercury is in in our natal-chart, furthermore, we can observe what aspects are being made to this planet which also helps to identify one’s inner-dialogue. This dialogue is also shaped by our family/environment as children and how those within our proximity spoke to us.

To help illustrate my point, lets take my Mercury placement as an example. I have Mercury in Virgo and I can be critical/rigid in the formulation of my thoughts/inner-voice— all of which is synonymous with those Earthy, Virgo characteristics. Realizing this, I reconditioned my inner-voice and mind, and the way in which I speak to myself by first becoming aware of how I was speaking to me moment-to-moment. Second, I identified thoughts that were not conducive to growth and development and replaced them with a new, more empowering inner-dialogue.

I have a standard for how I allow others to speak to me, but more importantly, I have a standard for how I allow me to speak to me.

Having a nurturing and empowering inner-dialogue is essential to building confidence, self-worth, self-esteem, and manifesting our vision for our lives. Uplifting and positive self-talk acts as sustenance for our mental health. The belief, or lack thereof, in ourselves or what we can achieve is influenced by this inner-dialogue. We spend so much time talking to ourselves mentally on a daily basis, if it’s in a negative tone, that’s like being with someone 24/7 who talks in ways that aren’t fruitful, uplifting, and encouraging. The results are debilitating over time. We wouldn’t allow it with others, therefore, taking that same standard and applying it to ourselves can really help heal in terms of mitigating factors that produce mental imbalance or mental illness as I believe chronic, negative self-talk (which can lead to pessimism) is a form of mental illness.
